Exhibition :

“Random Assistant”, using a generative system to create artwork I have always left the decision making of my compositions to the programs I write. One of the components of this system is how to color and paint the artwork. I have decided to pull this functionality out of the software and giving this decision making control to the public. In a world of galleries and museums where the viewer is only allowed to look, not touch… I invite the public to help determine the fate of the artwork.

Presentation :

Black and white prints 9 feet x 4 feet, transparent watercolors and brushes for the public.

OFFF moves to Lisbon Portugal !

Since 2001, OFFF is exploring software aesthetics and new languages for interactive and visual expression.

Every year, the festival features digital artists, web and print designers, motion graphic studios and avant-garde electronic musicians. But OFFF is more than an event about any of these disciplines. More than a design conference, a multimedia trade fair, or a digital animation festival. OFFF is an enthusiastic celebration of a new visual culture.

OFFF is spreading the work of a generation of creators that are breaking all kind of limits. Those separating the commercial arena from the worlds of art and design; music from illustration, or ink and chalk from pixels. Artists that have grown with the web and receive inspiration from digital tools, even when their canvas is not the screen.

Building art making machines.

“Fundamentally, art/design has been taught as very static process… executing style/method and arriving at an end result”, says Joshua Davis. “I prefer to write programs (or machines, as I like to call them)… and it’s these programs that generate the compositions for me. With this method, the end result is never static; making room for as many anomalies as possible, every composition generated by the programs I write is unique to itself. I program the brushes, the paints, the strokes, the rules and the boundaries. However it is the machine that creates the compositions, the programs draw themselves.”

In this workshop, Joshua teaches how he uses Macromedia Flash and ActionScript to build his celebrated art making machines.
