These are from the early 90’s while in College at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. I would preheat my oven in my kitchen to 400 Degrees and heat these paintings 7 minute each side. The heat would cause the top varnish to dry faster than the oil based glazes underneath. This type of experimentation, even with paint then, is still very much part of my process today.

Since I work in the medium of technology to create and primarily use the internet as a means to present my work — I hardly use the internet as a starting point of inspiration.

I find that starting outside of my medium to experience things that I later try to reinterpret back into my medium is a great place for me to start. These early paint experiments remind me that I often found amazing results when I wasn’t quite sure about the path I was following. Even today… I’m not as astounded when I sit down and aim to create the exact idea I have in my head.

like this early work I take so much pleasure in letting the technology take me down unseen paths to uncover techniques, much like the process of burning my paintings in the oven.

ignorance is truly bliss… and love the fact that I’m never entirely sure where the hell I’m going.
