» unused TOOL Artwork , July 14th, 2004
These next few drawings represent just a few of my favorite drawings created after being inspired by the many elaborate things I saw while visiting the band, and time spent with TOOL guitarist Adam Jones at his home.

I like to show this image because sometimes I don’t always use an entire drawing, I often find parts of drawings abstracted can be more interesting. In this drawing I like the headdress, and some of the details around the feet and hands.

I find so much content in metal work on gates, and doorways throughout Asia and Europe. In this next series of drawings, I pulled from ancient masks and demons.

Demons placed in a generative engine.

final splash page design :

In the end, I created hundreds of compositions sitting on my hard-drive taking up 2.06 gigs of space, Most of it unused. I wish I could share all of the artwork here, but it would be too massive to archive, and present here. I’m appreciative with my time spent with Adam and the rest of the band and tried to create as much artwork as I could get out of my head based on the inspiration they gave me. When you have a chance to collaborate with other creative individuals, some new growth happens, and new paths are taken. At the end of it all we only worked on using the splash page for the toolband website, but this collaboration produced the most artwork I’ve ever done for a client that most people will never see.

Phenominal. Ive been reading/viewing your site for an hour or so, and its incredible.
I always loved your work. I’d love to have a better insight on how to produce these graphic. How do you bridge software programing with tools like illustrator and Flash…The industry need guys like you, superb work,
Holy Shit, your work trumps mine and i want to quit as a designer, how do you do this in flash, man,
Hi man, this just came to my mind:
You said that you have 2.06 gigs of unused compositions, how about sharing about 100 or 200 megs via Bittorrent? That way many people can have a look at it (and you’ll save a HUGE amount of bandwith)
Can you explain why it’s not going to be used? I have to think they appreciated your work more than their present site. Was it political with the record company? Creative differences? Costs? Any insight?
wow, i love all this work. i’ve been following you since you did dreamless and shift magazine. we’ve met before, at fitc. i’m the volunteer coordinator there. fun stuff.
anyway, i hope things are going well. keep posting @ the blog too!
Hello,Davis.

LOVE YOUR PICTURES!
My English is poor… Hope you can understand @_@
I love the subtle colors, it works so much better with the complexity of the image. Dynamic abstraction could do a lot for the textile industry, I want to see this stuff on a flexible surface. Very inspirational work, viva la vector!
I was at Semi-Permanent06 Sydney…I saw your presentation. Your quite a funny guy…ever thought of a comedy job on the side…wait what am I talking about…design is a full time job eh? And you should put all of your heart and soul into what you love. Your work is really awesome. The two things that stuck in my mind from the moment you said them were…”Love what your making” and ” The only obstacles we face, are the ones we place in front of ourselves.” I have always known that design was my destiny…you have confirmed this for me. Thanks heaps for your inspiration.
Awesome work! I saw you speak at Vidfest last week. Your talk was very inspiring, it gave me motivation to change my design process. I’ve decided to go back to my art days and rekindle some projects and incorporate them into my design. I’m in search for my new process, exciting! thanks for the inspiration. Rock on dude!
The demons in the generative machine would make some sick tattoos! Great stuff!!
I remember you saying you got inspired for the color scheme by the box cover for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. How very, very appropriate.
Have you ever thought of using processing? Do you use only actionscript to do all your work, or do you also use any type of scripting for illustrator?
I love your work & I love their work.
Both of ‘em are very inspiring.

// Keep on rocking, dude!
Hey Joshua. Again, really dig your work and I think its a shame that all of that great work wont see the light of day.
Was curious if you could recommend a good flash program for me. I’m interested in web design and would prefer to work in flash for its slicker, more professional look. It seems that flashs’ limitations (artistically) are few……..which is attractive to me……..
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I know that your time is limited……….
