In May 2006 BMW threw their Lifestyle press event for the launch of the Z4 Coupe in Portugal. Members of the Press (GQ, Playboy, etc.) were flown into Lisbon, Portugal - where they were to pick up keys to a brand new Z4 Coupe and spend the first day hitting the roads of Portugal.

We were staying at a hotel in Cascais, Portugal and on evening of day one we were to meet with the 50 journalists from Europe, US, China, Japan, and South Korea and give them a presentation on the Z4, as well as the ad/print campaigns, and my limited edition prints.

Walking out of the balcony of my hotel room.

Day two. An opportunity to race the Z4 Coupe on the “Circuito Estoril” racetrack in Estoril, Portugal.

An Ambulance… you know… just in case. The press hosting they had for the hardcore gearheads just prior to this event totaled 4 or 5 cars on this track.

Inside the Hotel at the presentation space — members of the press were able to view the photographic campaigns by Rankin and Steven Klein — and a glass case holding 9 of my dynamically generated limited edition prints I did for the Z4 coupe.

Ok… When you have as many tats as I’ve got… some member of the press is going to ask you to get naked in front of the car for a photo shoot. So while this might not be the next pin-up you hang in your garage… Ladies… this one is for you.

Then after all this… it was time to get comfortable and unwind in a relaxed setting with the press. I played a lovely 18 holes of golf, was feed lavishly, smoked way too may cigars, and we finished it all up with a regatta race. Here’s my crew… looking way too relaxed to win this sucker.

Despite all my rallying of the troops… we came in second to last. What can I say?

After 5 amazing days it was time to head back to New York - and I manage to get out a bit and explore. I found this crest on the front door of an abandon hotel in Cascais.

PostScript doesn’t understand how Flash draws gradients or alpha for that matter. - so anytime I use gradients, I manually apply them in illustrator.

    Josh,

I have tried you procedure with much success and noticed something odd. If you make the object you are replicating a gradient, and then print it to file, it retains its color if the color is applied dynamically. If you do not have the object as a gradient, it comes out black and white. Very odd.

MAC or PC David - I save the file as something.ps which I open in Adobe Illustrator.

Josh, just wanna ask regarding that mentioned procedure from above. Uhhhmmm…. i’ve tried your procedure and all i could get is a whole picture (like being screen shot) of your work and being placed or just put in AI or PS. thank you! Just a question!

depends if you’re on a MAC or a PC.

    MAC :

    1. run your .swf file
    2. ctrl click and select print
    3. advance past first dialog window
    4. at second window… lower left “save .pdf as PostScript”
    5. save as something.ps
    6. open .ps file Illustrator.

    PC.

we need to install a PostScript printer driver

    1. Add printer from Start menu
    2. don’t auto detect
    3. select “Apple”, “Laserwriter 12/640 PS” printer driver
    4. run .swf file
    5. right click and select print
    6. point to Apple Laserwriter 12/640 PS printer
    7. check “print to file”
    8. click “preferences”
    9. click “advanced”
    10. click “postscript options”
    11. click “Postscript Output Options” dropdown
    12. select “Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)
    13. click “OK”
    14. click “OK”
    15. click “Print”
    16. save as something.ps
    17. open .ps file Illustrator.

if you don’t do all of this for PC - it rips it with no color - Black and White.

and that’s it !!! have fun.

    Hi!
Ive checked out most of your stuff after seeing your presentation on adobes website and love what I’ve seen so far.

In the video you mention that you can whenever capture what you have created with your applications in flash and export them to illustrator (I assume that you mean while playing your swf). How?

hoping to hear from you or any one else reading this/ Dave

you were here in portugal? oh, crap.
how the hell did i miss that!? once in a lifetime chance, down the drain. well, you know, in here the sun always shines, the scenery is awesome and the women are beautiful (maybe your wife won’t appreciate that last one). it’s a great place to host some sort of conference and what not… so… you know… next time you’re in spain or whatever, come on down!

The only thing that traumatized me was Little K’s vocal observations about how many times I went in and out of the house. As my fiance says, I have a small bladder. KRZR stuff is very nice!! Woot.

    Hey Joshua!

Thanks for all your outstanding work during the past 10 years!

I’ve been wanting to thank you for your presentation at the IdN Fresh Conference 2001, in Sydney, Australia - you (ok, together with Yugop) are the reason I’m in this game.

    So: thank you for everything!

Being a clueless “multiMediaDesign” student at the time, attending your session kept me inspired for a very long time.

Also, any chance you’ll start using the ‘post’ function rather than ‘page’ to post to your diary (makes for a sweeter RSS feed)?

    All the best,
    Hans Magnus

Did you enjoy working on cars? is it something you would do again in the future?
