So after I got back from Australia I had to coordinate a photo shoot for the two faced project. This project paired off two creatives, giving them the task of having to draw the other. I was paired off with New York City photographer David Harry Stewart, whom I have actually been good friends with for 13 years now.
So I took a couple of pictures of dave.

ran this one through - trace bitmap (because it’s that bad)

ran a process to rip all the shapes and colors to MovieClips - and used a “for in” loop to cycle over the clips and start deleting clips from the image. At this point I realized Dave has a pretty nice looking skull… so why not show it too him.

Final Image.

So then Dave got all his equipment set up and we decided that we would show some of the environment in my backyard. My wife and I just built a greenhouse on our property, and we have a great time working with plants, flowers, fruit, and shrubs. So shooting the portrait in a non-digital environment seemed the perfect contradiction of my career. Throw in a ton of your 3 year old daughters toys, a cigar, a watering can, and completely ridiculous waving to the neighbors pose… and we had our shot.

omigawd, the photog. of you watering your plants is hysterical and brilliant. im absolutely gaga over the work from the TAG exhibition…its soooooo seductive. i was in nyc for a conference and went to the MOMA (i hadn’t been there since the renovation!) and saw this killer john maeda installation and remembered that i didn’t know who he was when i was taking your class!!!! im an idiot. but i love his work now. so thanks for sharing!
Dude, very cool. Thanks
It’s actually easier than you think.
1. flash, trace bitmap.
2. copy and paste from flash to illustrator.
3. select all, and change transparency to 99% in illustrator.
4. export to .swf from illustrator.
5. any vector with transparency gets ripped to a graphic symbol.
6. import .swf into flash
7. all vectors are now graphic symbols.
8. select all and in the property inspector change all clips from graphic symbols to MovieClips.
finished.
you can get thousands of vectors auto-ripped to symbols.
How did you convert each of those parts to movie clips, I mean running a vector trace and then F8-ing each shape would be a pain. I can’t think of how to batch convert to mc_’s all the shapes that trace bitmap produces.
Very impressive.
I’ve enjoyed your work since the early Praystation days and I must say, it’s quite nice to see some of the in process phases of the work you do. When working with my own designs and algorithms it can be a bit discouraging at times to try and make that leap from that beginning point of writing the algorithms and getting first results back from them to get to the point where we usually see your work; polished and done. This certainly helps bridge that gap - would love to see more process stuff.
Oh and that final picture in the backyard, classic. Very nice.

maybe…
I had to do a portrait of Dave and I didn’t wanted to rip him apart too much.
:)
joshua, i think i would be sick if you had your illustrations coming out of his eyes and ears, leaving the green shrub background the way that it is. Then have the bottom be filled with the illustrations, coming out of daves neck. I ll try it and see what i come up with. Just using basic shapes and lines.
I also like daves scull oh and his bald head.

Hi Joshua, very inspirational stuff here, damn good and fun to browse through your website.
Now if i were to be a bit dramatic i would say it brings an ache to my heart with a hint of envy. Mainly because i love art too, but have a lot of blockages when trying to release my creative juices on my “canvas”. So thanks for the needed inspiration, it gets me going again!
hi farah - thanks for checking out my work and thanks to the woman on the bus - people find my work by word of mouth… I don’t advertise my services. So I’m glad you stopped by… I just recently got a flickr account where you can check out tons of images I’ve worked on over the years.

Wow,Believe or not I have never heard of Joshua before.I actually bum into this girl on a bus talking about Joshua’s terrific work.So I decide to found out about this guy. When I visit his website I was mesmerize. Although I am not an art students I was very impressive with his work. I don’t know how to express it but I think his work express it all. Keep up the good work man.
