landscaping spring 2008

Over the past few years I’ve been photographing nature to use as color and composition. About 2 years ago… I got a bit of a green thumb… bought a greenhouse and started fanatically landscaping my yard. If I’m not Drawing or Coding… I’m probably outside working with my plants. If I was ever asked what would I do if I didn’t have my current profession I’d probably pick landscape design.

my asian corner… bamboo shoots are starting to poke up… ferns, grasses, and moss filling in nicely… still waiting for my 3 azalia bushes to open.

I have 5 varieties of fern and these are my favorite… which are just now starting to unravel. Don’t even get me started on L-Systems and ferns.

the rest of the landscaping is a mixture of plants… this corner has, honeysuckle, day lilies, roses, buddleia (butterfly bush) and this variegated leaf ground cover just popped some flowers…

still waiting on a ton of new bulbs planted… 5 varieties of lilies, alcea rosea (black), mexican shell flowers, canna (golden lucifers), lilium, iris germanica, oxalis, dahlia, and a ton of other stuff I can’t remember.

Hello ! wordpress

I’ve decided to embark on the arduous task of converting my entire portfolio to wordpress. The CMS and CSS possibilities of wordpress make it too easy to do the things I want to do… so with that said I will no longer be updating the Flash and XML site that I’ve been using for the past year.

Light gray links in the main nav are not available yet as the framework for these sections has not been finished yet. Any main nav links in blue are open and can be viewed - though some sections may be updating and the site could break or fail to display as I continue the progress of updating the CSS and PHP files.

Lets Illuminate, color system

I obviously love working with Flash and Vectors via postscript to generate compositions for print… however it’s hard not to love BitmapData. With Branden Hall giving me crash courses in OOP and AS3 classes… my future might be in PNG32 Outputs.

Lets Illuminate

My father-in-law runs a lighting business and he asked me if I would come up with a website URL for him — so I thought “lets illuminate” had a good ring to it. I installed wordpress and wrote a quick theme for him to update. Then I thought I’d come up with a splash-page of animation based on this concept of illumination. Using AS2, BitmapData, and a blur filter… the end result is a nice pulsating algorithm of light and color.

Building art making machines.

“Fundamentally, art/design has been taught as very static process… executing style/method and arriving at an end result”, says Joshua Davis. “I prefer to write programs (or machines, as I like to call them)… and it’s these programs that generate the compositions for me. With this method, the end result is never static; making room for as many anomalies as possible, every composition generated by the programs I write is unique to itself. I program the brushes, the paints, the strokes, the rules and the boundaries. However it is the machine that creates the compositions, the programs draw themselves.”

In this workshop, Joshua teaches how he uses Macromedia Flash and ActionScript to build his celebrated art making machines.
